Biography

Sophie Broun joins Breakthrough Energy’s Innovator Fellows program from Anning Corporation based in Houston, Texas. Sophie is an engineer and geoscientist bringing over 15 years of global upstream energy experience across exploration, drilling and operations in Australia and the US. Sophie founded Anning with a vision to build the future of energy through geologic hydrogen.

Anning is a stimulated geologic hydrogen exploration and production company. Combining technology development, advanced exploration models and leading experts, Anning is developing projects with the potential to become the largest and most cost-effective source of clean hydrogen in the US. Our mission is to deliver carbon free hydrogen that’s cheaper than gasoline and accelerate the energy transition. Through support from the Fellows program, Anning aims to demonstrate the feasibility of stimulated geologic hydrogen production at our first project location.

In her free time, Sophie enjoys being outdoors, skiing, hiking and mountain biking. Sophie holds a Bachelor of Science in Applied Mathematics and Physics and a Bachelor of Mechanical Engineering from the University of Western Australia. She also attained a Master of Science in Petroleum Geoscience from Royal Holloway University of London, a MBA from the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania, and is a Licensed Professional Geologist in the State of Texas.

My parents. My dad is an entrepreneur and my inspiration.

Ikigai. Passion that gives value and joy to life. Working on what you love, what you’re good at, what the world needs and what you can be paid for.

There are some things that are so important that you must try even if it means you could fail.
