Shen Ming Lee joins Breakthrough Energy’s Innovator Fellows program from Terra Oleo in Singapore. Shen is the CEO and Co-Founder of Terra Oleo, where she leads the company’s strategy, fundraising, business development, and team growth. With roots in Malaysia’s palm oil industry and a background spanning food and agriculture technology, Shen brings deep expertise and strong industry connections in palm oil and oleochemicals to Terra Oleo.
Terra Oleo’s tunable platform transforms agro-industrial waste into sustainable palm oil ingredients and cocoa butter alternatives, enabling the decarbonization of personal care, cosmetics, pharmaceuticals, and food. Terra Oleo’s ingredients offer a sustainable and cost-effective alternative to conventional fats and oils, addressing critical challenges such as regulatory pressure, volatile supply chains, and tightening impurity standards. Through the Fellows program, Terra Oleo is scaling from lab to commercial validation with key customers to accelerate the adoption of clean, next-generation lipid ingredients.
A lover of all things gastronomy, Shen enjoys cooking, hiking, rock climbing, dancing, and practicing yoga. She grew up in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, and holds a Bachelor of Science in Hotel Administration from Cornell University.
Q&A
01 What's the best piece of advice you've been given?
‘Success is liking yourself, liking what you do, and liking how you do it. ‘ — Maya Angelou. While Maya didn’t give me this advice directly, it remains the most impactful I’ve heard. Defining my own version of success has helped me attract aligned opportunities, experiences, and people into my life. It’s given me the confidence to chart my own path and the courage to let go of what no longer brings me joy.
02 What beliefs drive you?
Who you are is more important than what you do. Your character says more about you than your achievements.
03 Share a fun fact about yourself:
I trained in Flamenco, a traditional Spanish dance, for 10 years, starting at age 8. I completed formal exams with a dance institute in Spain and choreographed performances throughout high school. While I don’t dance as much now, it gave me lasting confidence and a strong sense discipline which I am deeply grateful for.
