Mathias Bösl joins Breakthrough Energy’s Innovator Fellows program from Spark eFuels in Berlin, Germany. He serves as Co-Founder & CEO, leading company development, investor relations, and strategic growth at Spark. He holds an MBA and priorly worked as a strategy consultant for Boston Consulting Group, where he was on the frontline of green-tech commercialization and strategy development for sustainable technologies, like nuclear fusion, fuel cell cars, and silicon PV. He holds a PhD in physics focused on nuclear fusion and has a deep passion for deeptech innovation and scaling sustainable solutions.
Spark e-Fuels is pioneering the future of sustainable aviation fuel production with its proprietary, demand-responsive, and scalable e-fuel technology. By enabling cost-effective production, powered by renewable energy, Spark is accelerating the transition to net-zero aviation and driving broader industrial decarbonization. Unlike conventional technologies, Spark’s demand-responsive approach is uniquely designed to directly leverage lowest-cost, but intermittent energy from renewables, whilst significantly reducing energy storage needs. This results in a substantial projected reduction in total production costs, as well as CO2 emissions. Through the Fellows program, Arno, Julia, and Mathias will build strategic partnerships, drive industrial scale-up of Spark’s technology, and advance its path to commercialization.
Outside work, Mathias loves spending time with his daughter and exploring the mountains around Munich, mountain biking, hiking, or mountaineering. He earned a Bachelor’s and Master’s of Science in Physics from the University of Regensburg, a Master of Business Administration from Collège des Ingénieurs, and a PhD in Physics (on nuclear fusion) from TU Munich and Max-Planck—equipping him with the necessary skills to build Spark.
Q&A
01 What's the best piece of advice you've been given?
As my former soccer coach used to say: ‘Everyone’s just cooking with water.’ (German saying) It reminds me that even the most impressive people start with the same basics—what matters is dedication and mindset.
02 I recently discovered that:
I recently discovered that with a real baby, you’ll have many more sleepless nights than with a startup ‘baby’—and there’s no pause button or pivot option.
03 What beliefs drive you?
Life is short, so we shouldn’t waste it on things that don’t matter to us. I believe in focusing energy on what feels meaningful—whether that’s the problems we choose to solve or the people we choose to build with.
