Biography

Eric Burns joins Breakthrough Energy’s Innovator Fellows program from Thunderstone in San Francisco, California and Edmonton, Canada. Eric is a PhD chemist with a 10+ year track record of co-founding and leading organizations, startups, and teams . Most recently, Eric was a climate associate and in-house entrepreneur at Deep Science Ventures.

Mining is facing a known efficiency and environmental challenge. Without a change to the way we mine and source critical mineral supply, we won’t be able to secure tomorrow’s infrastructure requirements. Thunderstone tries to solve these challenges by turning ore bodies into an ideal in-situ mine project. Enhanced fluid and permeability control can allow us to achieve both excavation-less and tailing-less mining and lower cost metal extraction. The Fellows program will help Thunderstone gain access to world-class experts that can help derisk critical scaling pains as they derisk tech and market.

Eric has dedicated his entire education and career to solving critical challenges in climate, health, and wellbeing. Eric finds time for fun, often live looping various instruments at an open mic stage or jamming with fellow musicians on the electric violin. He is also a passionate ad-hoc home chef and ingredient enthusiast who despises recipes, as well as an avid follower of geopolitics and history.
Eric holds a Bachelor of Science in Chemistry from North Carolina State University, a Master of Research in Green Chemistry from Imperial College London, and a PhD in Inorganic Chemistry from Eidgenössische Technische Hochschule Zürich (ETH Zürich), completed at the Paul Scherrer Institute.

Q&A

01 Who has had the greatest impact on your career path?

Probably my high school AP literature teacher. I had a very literal interpretation on the world prior to his class. No joke, but prior to his class it really felt like I couldn’t “see the forest for the Trees.” His class really forced me to dive into deeper depths of significance and meaning than I was adequately prepared for. I struggled, but really feel like I came out a changed person. I feel like the class gave me the tools and interest to take charge of my life with a lot more intention and introspection.

02 What beliefs drive you?

I’ve been privileged enough to see that it’s actually possible to make long standing system change. I’ve built out several organizations and communities that continue to enrich people’s lives from mental health, to empowerment, to music, and climate. I believe you can and should make a difference for the better in other people’s lives and that it’s possible for individuals to effect change in wider systems. I also believe in order to build long term healthy communities and teams, leadership is also about stepping back so others can step in. Lastly, I believe in quality of life and that we can build a better world for all of us.

03 Share a fun fact about yourself:

Here’s two: I perform improvisational live looping music performances with electric violin, guitar, and voice. Also I was an English Breakfast chef on the weekends in London.
