Collin Juurakko joins Breakthrough Energy’s Innovator Fellows program from Advanced Agriscience in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. Collin is a Molecular Geneticist and entrepreneur with a background in synthetic biology, ice nucleation, antifreeze proteins, and plant freezing tolerance. As founder and CEO, Collin is responsible for leading business and technology development for Advanced Agriscience.
Advanced Agriscience is developing a novel approach for crop frost protection to solve the growing challenges posed by climate change on agriculture around the world. Through the Fellows program, Collin will further develop the technology towards commercialization.
Collin holds an Honours Bachelor of Science in Biochemistry from Queen’s University in Kingston, Ontario along with a Master of Science in Molecular Genetics from Queen’s University and a Doctorate in Molecular Genetics from Queen’s University. Outside of work, Collin enjoys working out, watching movies, and playing video games with friends.

02 Who has had the greatest impact on your career path?
My parents, Timo and Nuala, who instilled in me a strong work ethic and supported my pursuit of advanced education and my dreams; and my graduate supervisor, Dr. Virginia Walker, whose mentorship enabled and shaped my research. I am eternally grateful for these opportunities afforded to me and the positive influences that have shaped me as an individual and scientist.
