Biography

Bonnie EJ Maven joins Breakthrough Energy’s Innovator Fellows program from Vertility Health in the Bay Area, California. Vertility Health is creating breakthrough biotech solutions for animal fertility that accelerate the spread of climate-resilient traits while reducing inbreeding risks. Raised on a small farm in Bastrop, Texas, Bonnie discovered her passion for biology early on and has spent over 15 years advancing it at the intersection of genetics and developmental biology.

Vertility Health empowers farmers with immediate, precise control over breeding the next generation. Its low-cost, simple genetic selection technology enables any farmer to improve herd health, productivity, and resilience. Through the Breakthrough Energy Fellowship, Bonnie will advance this technology from lab to field and refine the company’s go-to-market strategy.

When Bonnie is not exploring new places with her dog, she enjoys reading science fiction and solving puzzle challenges. She earned her Bachelor of Science in Biology Honors from the University of Texas at Austin and her PhD in Developmental Biology from the University of California, San Francisco and Gladstone Institutes.

Q&A

01 Who has had the greatest impact on your career path?

My mother. Her resilience has inspired me throughout my life. She went back to college while raising me and my three brothers, then earned her PhD in biochemistry. She fully understands the challenges of a career in science and has been my strongest supporter through every high and low.

02 What is the most impactful book that you have read?

I know it’s cliché for a biologist, but reading On The Origin of Natural Selection when I was younger opened up a whole new world of the meaning of biology.

03 What did you want to be when you grew up?

When I first learned what a geneticist was, I was certain I wanted to be one. I’m still studying genetics today, just from a different angle.
