Ferrum Technologies

Company Description

Steel is foundational to global society—yet the industry emits 7-9% of global CO2 emissions. Technologies have been developed to produce steel with a lower CO2 footprint, but those approaches require high-quality iron ore, which is scarce and expensive. Ore quality requirements are a key bottleneck to steel decarbonization.

Ferrum is commercializing a melter technology, which can bolt on to existing low-emissions steel plants, allowing them to use abundant, inexpensive low-quality ore while also upcycling their waste streams into ground granulated blast furnace slag (GGBS), a standardized low-emission cement alternative. This solves the central ore quality bottleneck of decarbonizing global steel production while also making existing and trusted low-emissions technologies cost-competitive to CO2-intensive processes.
