Bainan Xia joined Gates Ventures as a research software engineer of Breakthrough Energy Sciences team in October 2020, where he is responsible for power system modeling, optimization problem formulation and software framework buildup.
Prior to Gates Ventures, he joined the clean energy modeling team at Intellectual Ventures (IV) as an intern in 2017 to help build the foundation of the simulation framework at the initial stage of the project. Later after graduation, he started his career as a research software engineer back to the team at IV and continued working on the model expansion and software development.
Bainan holds a Ph.D. in Computer Engineering from Texas A&M University. His research interests include optimization, game theory, machine learning, reinforcement learning, network economics, multi-agent system and numerical analysis. His previous research and publications covered the applications of Mean Field Game analysis and mechanism design in large scale power grid and electricity market.
Bainan lives in Seattle and likes the mild temperature all year around. In his free time, he enjoys cooking, swimming and playing video games with friends.
