Biography
Tim Singer joins Breakthrough Energy’s Business Fellows program from San Francisco, California. Tim’s broad experience and expertise range from infrastructure development and regulatory engagement to venture capital and corporate strategy. As a Business Fellow, Tim will help Innovator Fellows drive customer traction and secure financing in pursuit of commercializing game-changing climate technologies.
Tim has spent the past 15 years working across the private and public sectors to develop, scale, and deploy energy technologies. During his most recent roles in corporate venture capital at BP Ventures and National Grid Partners, Tim invested $180M across 25 cutting-edge energy and tech companies. Tim understands the drivers of corporate decision-making, especially around the adoption of emerging decarbonization solutions, and has authored multiple investment theses and internal strategy documents detailing how corporates can better engage with startups.
In his free time, Tim can be found fussing over his houseplants, cooking something new, reading, or on a local trail with his wife and two dogs. He holds a Master of Environmental Management from Duke University’s Nicholas School of the Environment, an MBA from UNC Chapel Hill’s Kenan-Flagler Business School, and a BS in Aquatic Biology from UC Santa Barbara.

I have eight different SCUBA certifications.
02 What did you want to be when you grew up?
A pilot—I remember being drawn towards the sleek lines and advanced technology of modern aircraft, and I’m still fascinated by aerospace. Plus, pilots get cool hats.
03 What beliefs drive you?
One of humanity’s greatest assets is our ability to solve complex problems with technological innovation, even knowing complete solutions might take generations. “A society grows great when old men plant trees in whose shade they shall never sit.”
